The Oratory at Brougham Castle The oratory was a small chapel at Brougham Castle which was used for private worship by the castle's occupants. It was added around 1300 by Robert Clifford, 1st Baron Clifford. It is high up in the keep of the castle, it was built during a period where the jeep was heightened, an extra floor was added for private chambers. Scottish mansions don't get much grander than Floors Castle in the Scottish Borders. Overlooking the historic town of Kelso, the largest inhabited house in Scotland is still lived in by the Duke and Duchess of Roxburgh. It was constructed by the 1st Duke in 1721, replacing a small towerhouse with something more fitting his new station! That in turn was transformed with the addition of two large wings and lots of fancy turrets and spires in 1837 by renowned architect William Playfair. It would un
