From rain to ice, North Texans should prepare for a freezing weekend as snow and sleet take aim at the Metroplex.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning Americans about travel over the next week, including simply driving locally, as a swath of historic cold temperatures and heavy snowfall make its way across the U.

There’s little doubt Charlotte will be hit by a winter storm this weekend, and forecasters say it appears Mecklenburg County is likely to get more freezing rain than snow. That means dangerous roads, slippery sidewalks, falling tree limbs and power outages due to downed power lines.

The winter storm forecast for the coming weekend (Jan. 24-25, 2026) is shaping up to be more of an icy mix for most of central North Carolina, with poor road conditions and possible power outages a major concern.
