Sony has announced today that it has signed a “memorandum of understanding” with one of its erstwhile arch rivals, TCL, to set up a new global joint venture set to encompass the entirety of Sony’s home entertainment products business.

Sony is spinning off its Bravia TV business to TCL through a 51% stake sale, marking a major industry shift as Sony pivots toward entertainment IP and TCL gains a premium global brand.

TCL will own 51% of the proposed joint venture and manage the manufacturing and sales of Sony's TVs and home audio devices worldwide.

Sony has announced plans to spin off its TV hardware business, shifting it to a new joint venture with TCL. The two companies have signed a nonbinding agreement for Sony’s home entertainment business, with TCL set to hold a 51 percent stake in the new venture and Sony holding 49 percent.

Sony and TCL struck a partnership giving TCL control of developing and selling future Sony audio products, including BRAVIA TVs, through a joint venture with a 51% TCL stake starting in 2027.
