What is freezing rain? 5 reasons it's the worst
Here are five reasons why freezing rain is the worst precipitation type:
Sleet and freezing rain may seem similar at first glance, but they are definitely different when it comes to impacts.
When freezing rain totals get up to 1/4", we start to see this weighing down trees and power lines a bit more. Isolated power outages are possible, but they are generally fairly isolated. Travel becomes hazardous, and the roads are an ice skating rink.
ATLANTA — Winter storms can bring a wide variety of precipitation to the Peach State, from snow to sleet, freezing rain and just plain rain. Although snow is what many get most excited about and fixate on, freezing rain is a greater danger. It can lead to extremely dangerous driving conditions and power outages.
A powerful Arctic cold front will bring freezing temperatures and below-freezing windchills to the Rio Grande Valley over the weekend and into early next week. And the cold air mass could bring with it freezing precipitation, according to the latest forecast projections from the National Weather Service.
Late Saturday night through early Sunday: Several hours of freezing rain and freezing drizzle, which could allow ice to accumulate on trees, power lines, bridges and untreated roads. Sunday: Precipitation may become more mixed, with sleet and cold rain, and possibly a few snowflakes mixed in at times.
Temperatures have already begun to drop in San Angelo this week into the 40s, ahead of a winter storm possibly bringing a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow later in the week as well as lows in the teens or single digits. The coldest times this week are expected to be Friday and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
