Temperatures Sunday will fall from the 50s and 60s at daybreak into the 20s and 30s by afternoon. The northern half of the state should be below freezing by 2-3 p.m. Sunday. Icy travel is possible over the northern half of the state late Sunday, Sunday night, and into the day Monday.
“If current forecast model trends hold, and so far they have for the last 48 hours or so, this could become a dangerous winter event for the northern half of the state of Alabama,” the weather service in Birmingham said in its Tuesday forecast discussion.

Our team is tracking the chance for a potential winter storm this weekend, with the risk of ice, snow and freezing rain.
A flood warning was issued by the National Weather Service in Birmingham at 8:05 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25. This warning applies to Greene, Hale and Marengo counties.
The track of that area of low pressure has been the subject of intense speculation over the past few days. A more northward track would mean less of a chance for freezing rain for more (but not all) of Alabama. A more southward track would could bring more ice into the picture for more of the state.
Patchy black ice could develop in parts of Alabama overnight into Monday morning, with the greatest risk on bridges, overpasses and shaded roadways where moisture lingers. With lows projected to plummet quickly into the teens, any leftover moisture on the roads will freeze leading to black ice and slick spots on the roads.
With winter weather hitting North Alabama this weekend, some school systems are announcing plans to be closed on Monday.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is keeping an eye on road conditions during a winter storm event in north Alabama and advises using extreme caution when driving in winter weather as well as on icy roadways. Troopers issued a warning about the possibility of black ice over the weekend.
